Power Steering Fluid Service
Power steering fluid ensures the hoses, pistons, valves and power steering pump work optimally. Without staying on top of the quality of your vehicle’s power steering fluid and flushing it and replacing it as necessary, the power steering pump will start to deteriorate. Power steering fluid is the hydraulic fluid used in the steering system to create a hydraulic link between the steering wheel and the front wheels. That decreases the amount of effort required to turn the wheels. Power steering fluid also lubricates the moving parts within the steering system. It suppresses foaming and prevents corrosion in the power steering gear and steering pump, which keeps vehicles working optimally. Power steering specification standards are requirements for the viscosity, detergents, additives and other components of the fluid. Meeting these standards ensures the power steering fluid is safe to use in a specific vehicle. Power steering fluid doesn’t expire, but if it isn’t changed or flushed when it needs to be, it will wear down in the system over time.
Transfer Case Fluid
If your vehicle is four wheel drive or all wheel drive, you own a transfer case. The transfer case takes the power coming out of your transmission and splits it between the front and rear wheels. Your transfer case is filled with a fluid that provides lubrication and cooling to the internal parts. In some transfer cases, the fluid also provides lubrication to a wet clutch that is used to vary how much power is sent to the front or rear wheels. Most transfer cases are filled with an automatic transmission fluid, which is usually red in colour. Others use a thicker gear oil, and some use a specialized fluid that is specifically made just for that transfer case. Transfer case fluid doesn’t last forever. Besides losing its ability to lubricate properly, transfer case fluid contains many additives that also degrade over time. These include:
- Extreme-pressure (EP) additives that protect against wear. These additives can eventually react with the water that forms inside the case from condensation, forming acids that may damage seals and other parts.
- Detergents that capture dirt and debris, suspending it so that the contaminants cannot cause scuffing or wear. Eventually the detergents in a fluid become “full” any cannot trap any more material.
- Corrosion inhibitors that prevent rust and oxidation inside the case. These additives become less effective as they age as well.
- Anti-foaming agents that prevent the oil from frothing as the gears spin through it. These chemicals are super important, because foamed oil has air bubbles in it, which weaken the crucial fluid barrier between the parts.
- Friction modifiers that extend the life of the clutches.
Replacing a transfer case can cost between $1500 and $5000, depending on the type of vehicle. The best way to protect this expensive component is to perform rather inexpensive replacement of the transfer case fluid regularly. Driving with an oil leak means extra wear and tear. Front and Rear Differential Fluid
Differentials work with your transmission to deliver power from your engine to the axle that turns your wheels. Most four-wheel drive vehicles have both front and rear differentials.
Lubricating fluid inside the differential transfers heat away from the gears, helping to preserve the life and performance of your differential. Over time, though, operating temperatures and wear can cause the fluid to break down. When the fluid breaks down or becomes contaminated, performance and longevity may be impacted.

Transmission fluid is a slippery liquid that acts as a lubricant for all of the moving parts inside your transmission. In an automatic transmission, this fluid also serves as a coolant and a viscous fluid that transmits power from the engine to the transmission.
Manual Transmission
In a manual transmission, the problem is not so much the fluid degradation, but rather fluid contamination. This contamination occurs over time as the synchronizers, bearings and gears in the transmission wear out. The resulting metal particles then float around in the lubricant. And we all know that oil with microscopic particles of metal in it does not lubricate as well as clean oil. So if these contaminants are not drained out, they will shorten the life of your transmission.
